A Boxcar of Goodies...

I am a firm believer in gift cards, especially now that we live so far away from our friends and family and shipping costs a pretty penny! However, there is still something just a teensy bit impersonal about a gift card and I like to dress them up with a special card or packaging. My "Christmas Baby" dad-in-law is getting an auction site (can you guess which one?) gift certificate for Christmas, and I thought I would whip up a creative card to deliver it.
Our son's Papa is a big-time model train buff. He is also an architect, so you can imagine what his layout looks like! We thought we would feed his train habit and I wanted my card to reflect his fun hobby. I started by searching high and low for a train stamp in my stash and found an adorable little engine. But, I needed a box car and a flat-bed car (if I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't...I'm just using terms that seem correct!) So, I decided to draw my own, using the wheels from the engine as a base for each for consistency. I colored everything in with bright colors and added a sparkly and festive Christmas tree. It's a long card and I finished off with a homemade envelope.

Very cute card and very nice idea. I love your use of color and how the gift card itslef works right into the layout and design of the rest of the card. Very cool.

I know just what you mean by gift cards feeling dull and impersonal, but they are the best gift sometimes. Like my son's teachers, they get a million apples, ornaments and candies. They could use a Target card more than anything else! When I dress up the card and give them with a special card or packaging, they make a wow moment too! :)
